Shenmue II on the Sega Dreamcast is the sequel to the groundbreaking action-adventure game Shenmue, developed by Sega’s AM2 studio under the direction of Yu Suzuki. Released in 2001, it continues the story of Ryo Hazuki, a young martial artist on a quest to avenge his father’s murder and uncover the mysteries surrounding a powerful artifact known as the Phoenix Mirror.
Over the years a variety of Shenmue 2 Dreamcast betas / prototypes have been released. The pick of the bunch is the release listed first below, the incredible GameJam Prototype.
GameJam Prototype (ALL DISCS) (JP, April 11, 2001):

The Shenmue II Game Jam (JP) prototype, dated April 11, 2001, is an early build of the game for the Sega Dreamcast. This prototype was acquired and released by members of the Shenmue community, including Shenmue Dojo, to aid in video game preservation efforts. The build was created on November 6, 2000, with the last modification on April 14, 2001. It predates the final Japanese version, which was mastered on July 16, 2001. The term “Game Jam” on the GD-ROM suggests it may have been used during the April 2001 Game Jam event in Japan.
This prototype offers insights into the game’s development, showcasing differences from the final release. The community has made the full 4-disc build available for public download, allowing enthusiasts to explore it directly on Dreamcast hardware. Notably, several versions are available, including the original GD-R dump, a modified version with debug menu access, a special build that enables bicycle creation on demand, and the “Yu Suzuki Build.”
