French publishing house Third Éditions has released a brand-new book about Shenmue’s legacy. Entitled La Saga Shenmue – Le voyage d’une vie (The Shenmue Saga – The Journey of a Lifetime), and written by Antony Fournier, this is the latest book dedicated to our beloved game series, and an exciting bit of Shenmue news to kick off 2026 with.
Check out the official blurb below (translated from French):
Both the iconic title of the Dreamcast and the sum work of its creator, Yu Suzuki, Shenmue represents the end of SEGA’s golden age. Avant-garde, this series has revolutionized the video game both in terms of game design and technology, establishing in particular the foundations of the open world, a playful device since acclaimed by the whole industry. More than a flagship game of its time or a simple video game experience, Shenmue is the journey of a lifetime, both for Yu Suzuki and for many players who have tried it.
In this book, Antony Fournier discusses the creation of these pioneering games and the many themes that compose them, rooted in the philosophy of martial arts, in the history of Japan and China, but also in a faith without limits towards the human being. He also analyzes the place that the license occupies today in the history of the video game as well as its nature of unfinished work in order to better understand its cult status.
The book is available to purchase now in both standard and ebook editions, as well as a gorgeous “first print” limited edition. This version comes with beautiful deluxe cover art showing Ryo and Shenhua, along with an exclusive bookmark and ex-libris book plate:

The book is currently only available to purchase in French, so if you want to read it you’ll either need to be a fluent speaker… or willing to learn a new language!
That said, this is such a stunning product that the first print version would make a wonderful collector’s item or display piece. This edition will only last as long as stock remains, so be sure to grab yours now before they run out.
