Ask the Person Below you a Question?

A: Do fish, mostly lakes, all year round (so ice fishing now), grew up on the coast so have offshore fished many times.

Q: can you recall a time someone did or said something that made you feel like you were worth something/could do something? If yes, tell us more details.

A: Yeah, and it’s thanks to this place actually. Some of you might remember Manny, who went by the name Segata Sanshiro Jr on here. He was looking for someone to do a short soundtrack for a game concept he came up with. I put myself forward and gained the contract.

After getting involved with his little pet project, he decided to invite me to GDC, which funnily enough was the same year of the Shenmue post-mortem. He paid for my ticket into the place and hotel room.

The experience and insight essentially set me on the path that I’m on right now. There was a one or two year delay whilst I got my head sorted, but besides that, yeah, I felt like I could make it in the video game industry.

There’s been plenty of times I’ve felt validated in some way by others, but the extent Manny went to is unlike any other. Usually it’s a case of feeling valued by a specific person or for a specific reason, whereas this guy made me feel like I had summat to contribute on a much larger scope, and I’ll be eternally grateful.

He’s also recently dropped a new trailer for his Kickstarted game Treachery in Beatdown City, I suggest you all go have a look.

Q: Is there an opportunity you’ve missed out on and since come to regret? (Or at least wonder what it woulda been like if you hadn’t missed out on it?) It should go without saying, but explain.

As emo as it sounds, one or two companions whom I regret being too socially inept and awkward and distracted to have been there for them... In terms of work, would be leading a film workshop, but when it was cancelled, I never kept trying to redo. With another attempt at another time of year/week, to fit with when prospective students usually were available for other classes taught at the same space.

Whats your middle name?

A: As part Finnish I got two (you always get two); Christine Julie

Q: If you could reschool, what would you be doing now? If you want, put in current occupation

A: I'm a junior medical writer. For my bachelor's degree I studied biomedical sciences and then for my master's degree last year I studied science communication. During my master's degree I started reading more into philosophy for some modules I was taking and found the subject enthralling! I love learning in general, but philosophy of science (or philosophy in general) for me was particularly fascinating. I remember interviewing for a job soon after my course and really pissing an interviewer off because he thought as a scientist, I shouldn't concern myself with ideas outside my practice. Oh well, sorry for having an open mind I guess.

So yeah, I could totally see myself in a parallel universe going down a career more geared towards philosophy, though I'm unsure what job that might lead to.

I also used to love art, and that's been something I've massively neglected over the years. For the longest time I wanted to be an artist, and at one point a concept artist for games. Seeing the wonderful fan art on this forum, I'm definitely more motivated to get back into this as a hobby and brush up on my skills.

Q: Most boring fictional character?

A: Personality-wise I’d probably say Ryo. He’s not exactly the type you’d go for a pint with, as he’s about as engaging as an indifferent parsnip.

Otherwise I’d go for Sean in Scrubs. He doesn’t seem to exist for any particular reason other than a live rival for JD that can be awkward in Elliot-esque ways. He’s just sort of a nothing character.

I know there are others throughout fiction who are bland, but he’s one that stands out because he doesn’t stand out. He really is that boring.

Or maybe every single character in both LotR and Harry Potter. Take your pick.

Q: Who’s your favourite comedian, and - if it’s an American stand-up - why have you got such shit taste?

A: A bit unconventional, but I really like Dave Gorman and his Powerpoint presentation style standup. Watched all of Modern Life is Goodish on TV and then once he'd finished with that I went to see him live in Edinburgh where he told perhaps the single best giraffe joke I'd ever heard. Would definitely recommend.

Q: When did you first get access to the internet and what was your first really memorable moment surfing the net?

A. Around 2002, in the middle school library. I was ten years old. The class was assigned the task of composing an essay about Sainsbury's (a supermarket chain here in the UK), using the internet for research. It didn't feel all that different to reading the pages of a magazine, except it was on a monitor. My, how times have changed...

First memorable moment was being shown Dragon Ball Z porn, rotten.com, and ogrish.com all in the same afternoon at a friend's house, around the same time as the event in the previous paragraph. I was amused, shocked, and intrigued all at once. My already-established morbid curiosity was opened up to a whole new world.

Q. Most memorable encounter with a crazy person?

A: When I was young browsing at a Barnes and Noble some pedo kept trying to offer to buy me manga, he was staring at my ass when I bent over to look at lower shelves, got the fuck outta there real quick.

Q: If you met Yu Suzuki and he allowed you to implement any one new gameplay mechanic/feature in Shenmue 3, what would it be?

A. A multiplayer fighting mode (separate from the main story mode of course), which would basically turn Shenmue into its own fighting game. Players could select Ryo, Chai, Lan Di, Iwao, Ren, Guizhang, and more. It would basically have mechanics similar to Virtua Fighter but have its own unique traits.

Q. Have you ever had anything of significant value ever stolen from you?

Not literally, but when my older bros sold our first Dreamcast for PS2, I was pretty heartbroken and felt something had been taken from me. Luckily, I had one back in time for Shenmue 2, Tennis 2K2, Headhunter, PSOv2 and NHL 2K2, though.

Worst weather you've ever experienced?

A: If we're going hockey or soccer, neither lol. Hockey if you put a gun to my head, but being in a country that rams it down your throat 24/7, I'm so sick of it, especially since it is incredibly mundane and less strategic, than say a (American) Football or Baseball (which is just another form of chess, really).

Soccer is the most boring sport/activity I have ever encountered, in my life (my opinion here, of course). The Simpsons captured my thoughts perfectly, albeit, with less class lol.

Q: Are you a fan of Sushi and have you eaten it in Japan, as well as your home country?

A: Appreciate sushi. Some
pieces more than others, more shrimp salmon cod than tuna... Haven't had the pleasure in Japan, never been, but enjoyed it loads in Hong Kong which serves it pretty different from Norway (where I'm at now).

Q: If you were a chess piece which would it be and why?

A. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (followed REALLY closely by The Real Ghostbusters)

Q. If you could live anywhere in the world you wanted, where would it be and why?

A. Canada. Upon my first visit aged 19, one of my chief goals has been to gain citizenship. Why? Driving the Queens Highway under a purple sky; meeting the friendly and intelligent people on each coast; the wonderful culture (jazz comes to mind) and outdoors. I'd try and marry my way in, but Nozomi is a bit old these days.

Q. What's a special dish or style of cuisine you've tried somewhere that you wish you could access more easily/commonly where you live?

Q. What's a special dish or style of cuisine you've tried somewhere that you wish you could access more easily/commonly where you live?
A: Onigiri. I have to drive very far to get it, and even that's subpar. I actually have to go all the way into the city to get the REAL good stuff. You'd think it'd be pretty commonplace at most sushi restaurants since it's basically the same thing, but nope...

Q: Have you ever tried authentic onigiri?

Q: Have you ever tried authentic onigiri?

A. Nope! I've eaten tons of sushi but not this. A quick Bing search revealed I'm about 16 minutes away from a Onigiri restaurant: https://umeonigirihouse.com I'll probably get some in the next month and try it!

Q. Chicken wings: Hot buffalo or lemon pepper flavor?

A: Hot buffalo. Never tasted either, but that sounds nice! To my defense I make mean hot chili Coca Cola soaked tender wing recipie.

Q: Anthony Hopkins or Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter and why?
