In incredible news for the community, Xiden has announced that the Network Rankings portion of Shenmue Passport has now been successfully reverse engineered and restored bringing the long-running restoration project full circle.
Working alongside Jial from Dreamcast-Talk, the pair have completed the final missing piece of Shenmue Passport’s online functionality. This means that every feature of Shenmue Passport is now operational once again, marking a major milestone for the preservation of Shenmue’s original online ecosystem.
What This Means
For many fans, Shenmue Passport was a fascinating companion disc to the original Shenmue on the Sega Dreamcast offering online rankings, character profiles, “What’s New” updates, and more. However, much of its functionality was lost when the original servers went offline.
Now, thanks to this restoration effort:
- The Network Rankings feature is fully operational again
- All core Shenmue Passport functionality has been revived
- The project has effectively reached completion
What’s Next?
The team isn’t stopping here.
Plans are already in motion to:
- Add new custom events via the “What’s New” section later this year
- Implement a feature allowing players to convert a Shenmue I (USA) save file into a Shenmue II PAL-ready file via the troubleshooting section (currently a work in progress)
This could prove hugely valuable for fans looking to bridge regional differences between releases.

How to Get Online
To access the restored online features, you’ll need:
- A Sega Dreamcast with the latest DreamPi 2.0 setup, or
- The Flycast emulator, with DCNet enabled
Full setup instructions will be published shortly at Dreamcast Live, with further guidance expected later tonight.
Compatibility
The restored functionality works with all versions of Shenmue Passport except the Japanese versions.
