Guardian Recommends Shenmue For Cosy Gaming

Posted on December 27, 2025 at 19:52 PM GMT

The Guardian has published a brand-new entertainment guide for the coming week, covering everything from TV shows and films to stream at home, to concerts and theater productions if that’s your kind of thing.

And for those looking to get cosy with a great video game, writer Matthew Reynolds recommends Shenmue I & II as the perfect adventure to get lost in. Check out the full quote below:

Shenmue I & II
PS4, Xbox, PC; out nowThe first entry in this leisurely adventure series sees you play detective in sleepy 1980s Yokosuka streets, with snowy weather creeping in with each passing December day. For those who appreciate attention to detail and sedate exploration, there are few better comforting treats for the time between Christmas and the new year. Matthew Reynolds

We couldn’t agree more; if you’ve been following us on our social media channels this week, you’ll have seen some video shorts showing off Shenmue’s cosy winter atmosphere and festive vibe. There’s something very apt in playing the original game around Christmas time, so let’s hope that the recommendation from Matthew Reynolds gets plenty of gamers to try Shenmue out for the first time.

Does it get any more nostalgic than this? ✨ Even after a quarter of a century, this neighbourhood still feels like like a second home to us. It always will. 💙

Anyone else grabbing some food after work tonight, Shenmue fans? 🍜 After grinding through this week, you deserve to blow off some steam with a friend and let someone else cook for you!

🇯🇵 "Shenmue" was so atmospheric for its time. I love just walking through the city on a rainy evening.

Neon signs, vending machines and 1980s Showa-era streets. A perfect blend of nostalgia and belonging.
