A musician going by the name of disc image has just dropped a Shenmue-inspired record on their Bandcamp page.
Entitled “yu”, the collection takes 14 of the most beloved tracks from Shenmue and Shenmue II and gives them the full remix treatment.
This project came about as a labor of love from two longtime Shenmue fans, and shares musical influences from genres such as lo-fi, house, and trip hop. There’s hints of Aphex Twin, Massive Attack, and even Akira Yamaoka’s Silent Hill OSTs on a lot of the tracks — we can easily imagine walking through the foggy streets of that town with these songs playing over the top.
We’ve given the album a spin twice now and we’re blown away by the passion and creativity here. Perfect to listen to as ambient background music, or for vibing out to while winding down, this is going to be staying in our playlist for the foreseeable future, especially as the nights draw in.
The album is now available to stream on Spotify and purchase from Bandcamp and runs for well over an hour. We highly recommend showing the artist some support and purchasing a copy of the album. If physical media is your thing, there’s an absolutely gorgeous cassette version available to buy now from disc image’s Bandcamp. It would look right at home on the Tomato Convenience Store’s shelves!
