General RGG Discussion

Spent more time with Tanimura yesterday. Got his heat moves unlocked via various means. He's pretty good in a fight now, quite enjoying using him, much like Akiyama and Saejima before him he's a nice change of pace. Really enjoying the cop related side stuff as well (and loving Nair, bring her back with Karou as a buddy cop game in the future please...)

Also spent quite a bit of time with some side stuff. Mainly Mahjong. Since its cheaper I've been doing the Mahjong League (as its a pay once, play forever deal). I'm in the top 10 now, and managed to get a 70K point win according to my completion list which is awesome! Also managed to nab the trophy for the all doubles challenge, its not the easiest thing to do, you gotta keep track of what tiles your opponents are dumping as it affects the likelihood of you getting a complete hand but its still leagues easier than the all naked hand from RGG3 that's for sure, that was a right pain in the butt to get.

Akiyama was the other big reason I loved Yakuza 4. Saejima is a great character story, but he was my least favorite to play.

Yeah, still not a fan of Shogi. I guess it doesn't help that I look at the pieces and just go blank as to how they move. At least I have it out of the way for completion sake. Back to romancing hostesses I guess as I try to make Tanimura's chapters last as long as humanly possible! (looks like one is insanely short)

New gematsu article on how they're stepping forward and other details:
Here are the notable tidbits:
  • Nagoshi does not consider Judgment to be a spin-off from the Yakuza series as “the characters from Yakuza do not appear in Judgment, and while it’s set in the same city district of Kamurocho, we wanted to make something different.”
  • Hosokawa was “a little worried that fans may be fed up of seeing the same location again” in Judgment, but the Yakuza series’ Kamurocho was used as it “has become a location the studio that we are familiar with,” because “it would suit the character and make the game much more fun to play,” and due to “cost and scheduling.”
  • Parts of Judgment began localization began about a year before the Japanese release, which allowed the western release to launch just six months after the Japanese release, according to Hosokawa. Nagoshi added that a simultaneous worldwide release was possible, but that from a business perspective there are so many big releases in the west that sales data takes time to properly forecast. “If Judgment sells well overseas then we will have the data so that if we do end up making a sequel, it may become possible to consider a simultaneous worldwide release next time,” Nagoshi said.
  • The localization for Judgment would be finished by now if they did not have to change the character model and actor for Kyohei Hamura. The western release is currently in QA.
  • A PC version of Judgment has yet to be decided, but other formats are being considered. “It’s not impossible, but I can’t say either way,” said Hosokawa.
  • There are “no plans at the moment” for a Yakuza game for Switch, according to Nagoshi.
  • Regarding the new Yakuza starring Ichiban Kasuga, Sato said, “I can’t go into detail yet, but in the near future we’ll be able to reveal something that will make you think, ‘Wow, that really does look different’. The continuity of the previous titles in the series still stands. We still have the Tojo Clan and the Omi Alliance yakuza organization, and when the game is released it will be set the appropriate number of years after the previous games. Unlike Judgment, this will be a continuation of the Yakuza series. But as for what’s new about it, you’ll just have to wait and see.”
  • Regarding some of the same locations from Judgment appearing in the new Yakuza game starring Ichiban Kasuga, Sato said, “You may see some of the same shops and bars, and if we can use some of the characters in a way that feels natural, it’s possible that we’ll see those appearances. I don’t intend to force it though. Judgment and Yakuza are separate series.”
  • Regarding Ichiban Ksuga, Sato said, “Kasuga is the polar opposite of Kiryu. They’re both strong men, but Kazuma Kiryu is a taciturn person who doesn’t speak without reason. He starts out in a coveted position within the yakuza, albeit an ill-fated one; he is seen as having a future within the yakuza, and we see him fall from grace and start a life of hardship. But even then, he has good friends who believe in him. On the other hand, Ichiban Kasuga starts out with absolutely nothing. He is not respected as a yakuza; he was born and raised on the streets of Kamurocho without any parents – well, Kiryu is also an orphan. But nobody looks up to Kasuga at all. He has to work his way up from rock bottom. We’re aiming for a character who contrasts starkly with Kiryu. I hope players will come to love him.”
  • Regarding the auditions for a supporting actress being held for the new Yakuza game starring Ichiban Kasuga, Nagoshi said, “I can’t say much. She is a character who is important to the story, but she’s not the heroine. She’s central to the story.” Sato added that, “There is a heroine, but she is a separate character alongside Ichiban Kasuga, and the audition is for a third member of their group.”
  • Nagoshi would say yes to Kazuma Kiryu being invited to Super Smash Bros., but does not think director Masahiro Sakurai would be interested.

Still no word on the Yakuza 3,4 & 5 Ports :(

I just bought "Yakuza 6 - The Song of Life, The Essence of Art Edition "new for $20

Even though I havent played 2-5, lol.

I doubt we'll get news of 3-5 before Judgment launches. I'm keeping an eye at E3, I think its the earliest we'll hear anything, but I never really expected Nagoshi to announce it in a Japanese interview. That'd be handled by Sega America/Europe I'd imagine?

Anyway, awesome interview and interesting to hear how far along the game localisation is. Still impressed by how quick they replaced Hamura. They did a good job with Kamurocho in JE, it didn't feel repetitive at all, quite the opposite actually. And surely those comments should cement that its also back for Shin RGG if there was any doubt (about them reusing certain locations added in JE).

Can't wait!

Thanks for that, Vivi-Gamer; I'm still hoping they hit release time (I think they will), as I want to play my usual, "Ryu ga Gotoku around January," time.

Yes thx for the Infos Vivi-Gamer. I really hope we get Infos about the ports of 3 to 4 as soon as possible. I really want to Play These games as soon as possible. But maybe we really won't get the info before the Judgment release..

I dont think the 3 and 4 ports have been confirmed for the west yet. Maybe Judgement is a test? See if they can gauge support for doing an English dub for ports of 3&4.

You are right there is no official confirmation yet but a Sega exuctive also said that they make the ps4 Version for new fans. Not sure if he even said for new fans out of Japan but not sure If my Memory cheats me here are not. In case it is treue the new fans outside Japan Thing would be a good indicator that a western release is at least considered. But of Course the new fans out of Japan could also mean just fans from other Asian regions.

So it could mean nothing. And I am not even sure to be honest with all of you if the new fans outside Japan quite even happend or if I am completly mistaking..

Outside of Japan does also indeed mean China and Korea. I see that phrase misquoted on Resetera so much it actively annoys me now, as its usually used with someone claiming the ports are already confirmed. I'm sure they are coming, but people gotta wait until Judgment is out before really expecting any news. Unless you don't want the A team working on the localisation that is.

As for dubs? That really shouldn't happen for the remasters. These are cheap, low budget remasters that are just for the hardcore fans who want to play the parts of the story they've missed on a newer console. Your not going to attract a larger more casual base to these games, especially 3 when most would probably give up and complain about it being "slow" in the early chapters. Not to mention voicing 3-5 and not 1, 2 and 6 just seems like a really bizarre option. Better to just focus on adding that level of options to Shin RGG and any new games going forward I think. Plus unless Sega pay Mark Hamill his fee, I don't wanna see Majima voiced by anyone else in English!

Anyway, chapter 2 of Tanimura done. Really fun end fight sequence, glad I'd spent hours levelling him up as it doesn't pull its punches, which was great fun. Also managed to do some more mini games - caught a Shark, finished Shogi, cleared the hostesses and finished off table tennis. Not long now until Kiryu's back in town :)

wow i totally missed that "april fools" video.
i think it looks super good! the character models and the animations are great.
i hope this "joke" is a little hint with regard to Shin Yakuza.
this would be a real cool clan creator kind of mode. or almost like a funny Final Fantasy fighting mode.
would they really put so much efford in just a joke? i hope this is a real thing.

Well, they might have put a lot of effort into the joke, but don't forget how much the team love to reuse ideas and assets. So, I can totally see it getting turned into something real down the line.

So, Kiwami 2 for PC coming on May 9th. Pretty good timing if you ask me, far enough away from E3 that the remasters may still get announced, maybe for PC at the same time as well (that'd be great!). Time to start looking at a new PC...

Also, finished off Tanimura's part today, the story is coming together nicely, though I still need to remember one particular part of the plot twist. I really liked Suguichi, he was a great character, and definitely one of the better boss fights in the game - it felt more organic - with him and Tanimura fairly evenly matched combat wise and assuming you'd leveled up enough, you had enough moves to play with during the fight. Also, semi separate note but getting a Champion Ring makes Tanimura's combat a world better - more aggressive enemies just works for his fighting style. You can get one from the free DLC packs (which are all included on the disc).
Also, I really liked the Nair side story. Its way better than the Akiyama and Saejima stuff, a better final fight and just better all round. Really fun.

My main issue is with the length of his chapters though. Tanimura essentially has just over 2 chapters worth of content, stretched thin over 4 chapters. Chapter 3 was pointless, and 4 was just a (really, really) good boss fight and some big plot twists. I really do wonder if there were some development issues with 4, in terms of story content, maybe adapting to 4 playable characters as 5 feels way more content rich by comparison - you think of all the game gives you for each character and, maybe I'm misremembering it but almost every chapter in that game has a pretty substantial plot and combat encounters - maybe save for a couple of bits around Saejima's third chapter (as that's basically just introducing the mountain, though arguably you can spend 10 hours doing that before going to chapter 4...) Even Akiyama's half set of chapters in 5 feel as substantial as 4 Tanimura chapters...
Maybe that's just me, its ultimately not a huge complaint as 4 is an excellent game, insanely fun and I've been glued to it since starting it. But its the only Yakuza game bar FOTNS that I've actively thought was too short plot wise.

I have the same issues; the Nair stuff was great indeed, but that's probably the only thing of Tanimura's that I actually enjoyed.

Shoehorning Yasuko/Lily into his story as well, was a bit unnecessary.

5 is indeed a much more substantial title, story-wise and Kiryu is mainly an afterthought, for half of his chapters in 4 (though the first chapter is absolutely awesome, with Hamazaki).

I'm actually a touch jealous that you get to play the first chapter again! lol

Kiryu's chapters definitely suffer from the same as Tanimura's. They are just so short. Chapter 2 is just a Majima cutscene. I really gotta wonder what the devs were doing with these chapters as some are just a cutscene or two. Its really odd. Oh well, the Tanimura/Akiyama fight in the following chapter was ace (but both needed more health, as its over too soon, especially if you have a Komaki enhanced Kiryu!
Onto Kiryu's final chapter now, and at least I know we've got an awesome long fight in this chapter (probably the best in the game, except for maybe Tanimura's main one).

On the brighter side, I love Kiryu's fighting style. Its just so deep, yet if you don't want to dip into it, just smack a guy round the head with a bike. Was very happy to get lots of the arena done as I've got enough for hostess stuff now! The side stories referencing older characters is a great call back to Yakuza 1-3 and I'm liking fighting the different gangs as well.

So while I still got the finale to go, I can see my opinion staying the same. Yakuza 4 is a great game, but a bizarrely short one! The characters are all fleshed out well if you do their side activities and stories (they are really well done in this game, less of them, but they all land far better than how earlier games had really short/more formulaic ones on the whole. At this point in the series the combat is the best its ever been (though 5 beats it here) and the story has been really enjoyable silly twists and all (rubber bullets is one thing, but Akiyama having the least secure safe ever is just a bizarre thing, not even a pad lock on it?!

Definitely think its the weakest of 3-5 though. 3 is rougher but the story and characters kick more ass (and thanks to only having one character, you have a better progression in set pieces, with the last one being basically the best thing ever) and until now I didn't realise how much better 5 did the multi protag thing, perhaps a little too well in terms of getting shit tons of content. 0 definitely just refines the whole thing though, so if we get another game with more than one character, I think they'll follow the 0 template (good news, even in Japan 0 is much loved so there's no reason for the team not to look at it as their best choice).

OMG Finally got through Haruka's pop idol segment. Literally took me over two years. Downloaded the Yakuza 5 from PSN week of release in 16/12/15 (released Dec 8 in US). Instantly hooked as always with Yakuza. Hunting slowed me down first for a couple months, for being a bit of a drag as well as adulting life. Haruka, although fun whenever I did muster up the will to play, was even more tedious for me because I'm terribad at rhythm games and don't care about J-Pop. Guessing I began Haruka around late 2016/2017--damn near two years of sporadic, uninspired play.

Thank goodness Akiyama showed up after not too long. Wish I would've trudged through earlier if i knew she only had a few required events and couple songs to do before the plot thickened. Should be finishing up 5 in a few days, then need to finally grab a copy of Y6 from Gamestop or Best Buy.

The end of Kiryu's chapter (plot wise) is quite messy when you think about it. Kinda brings the worst tropes in the series together to be honest. I'm actually preferring 5's plot thinking about it. Its convoluted, but not quite as silly as moments in 4. That said, the action in 4 is top notch almost all throughout.
Looking back at the plots of each game (Dead Souls excluded) 4 and 5 kinda feel like the weak points - great characters still but they got a bit too tropey at points. From Ishin, 0, 6 and then Judge Eyes it feels like they turned a corner in terms of better story writing - all those games had fantastic plots, and while a couple had some pretty crazy twists, they were cool above anything else. Definitely interested in seeing how they handle Shin RGG, hopefully we get a 6/JE level plot again.

Ok. Finished off Yakuza 4.

I've got some issues with the plot, in the later half of the game (in that it gets pretty silly in terms of betrayals and guns) but overall its still a fantastic game. The gameplay itself is a huge step up from 3 and I really enjoy all four character playstyles a great deal, especially swapping between them now in post game.

Speaking of which, I'm now focusing on hitting the 100% completion mark as always, so far I'm at 95%:
Almost done the food side of things (just got one drink to drink)

Modding wise I'm just two weapons short and I think those blueprints are unlocked as part of the last few side stories I've not done. Its actually easy to hit 100% of the modding targets in the game, way easier than I expected. I think 3's was way harder from what I remember.

I've still got a few Akiyama friends to go, but that's just because I completely forgot to do that part of the game (oops!)

Hostess wise I'm almost done with the first 7 (one to go) and then just another 1 to make No.1 Hostess (and then the dating stuff for that).

Mini game wise I've got the Japanese gambling left (though I'm getting there with those), not started Pachinko yet (yay...), still have a couple of Karaoke songs to do (taking my time with those), Japanese gambling games need to be completed and I still need to look at which fish I'm short!

Also, been working on Haruka's Trust and I'm up to S rank on that. Its all optional but I kinda enjoy doing this stuff!

Only mini game issue I've had consistently this game is 4 ball on Pool - the dotted guideline used when aiming is hilariously inaccurate, means that you stand a good chance of missing, glad clearing Pool on Expert is not a trophy as I don't see me clearing it unless I get super lucky.
