General RGG Discussion

yeah heavy drug use is a huge no go in Japan.
if you are an artist like a singer or actor or whatever,
they will remove all of your latest cds and movies from every shop if someone is accusing you of drug use.

i dont know if Sega of America can figure something out because the west is not so harsh when it comes to drugs
or if they just cancel the whole thing or change the ingame character.

this is a serious thing and theres a high chance that it will have consequences for the game worldwide.

I got one from amazon.co.jp now as well. As you never know if we might see the game again or not. i really hope the western outlets of sega can make sure the game is released. would be a complete loss if it gets lost. Especially if some voice actiong has already been done.

Oh crap...

Well, maybe he got into his character a bit too much? lol

Hamura does NOT do cocaine in the game, if anyone's wondering, but his attitude/character in-game certainly qualifies as one who might.

a japanese guy who works in Tokyo for The Wall Street Journal (asian tech news)
said that Sega is still discussing what they want to do with the western version.
no decisions yet, no updates.

FUUUUUUUG
Hell, having the guy being a coke addict might be a marketable point lol
Who the fuck thinks that having some random guy who is later caught with drugs reflects in any way on SEGA ?
Too much outrage over nothing these days.
I bet the guys that imported it feel like the wolf of wall street.

Not sure if it is "these days" or alwyas been Japan's cultural sensitivity to crime.

It’s the latter. This happens in Asian culture quite a bit. If you’re in the public spotlight and you do wrong then you will be publically shamed and ostracised

This sucks, he's basically the best character in the game, so even the best of scenarios probably has Sega replacing him. I reinstalled the game and patched it, then disabled auto updates on my PS4 so that I can keep the game in the state it is. Real pity, as this is easily one of the best games Sega has put out in years, and now they gotta pull it from shelves :(

the producer of Ryu ga Gotoku Studio Daisuke Sato tweeted that "he wont let it end this way"
and "it will be back."

he didnt mention Judgment or the character at all, possibly to avoid trouble
but its obvious what he is talking about.

the CEO of Cyber Connect 2 (Naruto Shippuden, Dragon Ball Project Z) Hiroshi Matsuyama
tweeted that its not right to punish the costumers and there should be a seperation
between the product itself and the people who made the product.

there is still no update or comment from Sega.

Pierre Taki is also the voice actor for a character in the japanese version of Kingdom Hearts 3.
and because of this whole drug abuse thing, Square Enix is gonna replace his voice.
they already announced that there will be a patch that inserts a completely new voice actor for the character.

If the game is cancelled or delayed, I won't let it go and no one else should. If they delay it to recast the character and redo all the lines, then that is so fucking stupid. Bloody Japan and their backwards, draconian laws and mentality surrounding drug use.

The West shouldn't be punished just because Japan reacts in a totally over-the-top fashion to one actor taking a bit of coke. We don't care in the West. All our actors and directors and even our politicians have done drugs.

I'm not saying we should have a hippy free for all as far as drug taking is concerned or that drug use should be promoted or condoned. There certainly a far more nuanced discussion we could have on the issue (e.g. whether criminalisation and stigmatising the issue really works and whether drug abuse should be treated as a health issue instead of a criminal one), but to stop selling a game or to delay a release in other countries is beyond ridiculous.

Problem is, the most obvious form of protest (not buying the game/localised version) won't really work here. Sega won't look and think its because of Japan's drug laws, they'll just stop putting effort into localising Yakuza (and spin off) games. So on the basis of the effort already put into the game (2 sets of subs, dub with actual decent union VAs etc.) I'll buy the game.

At the same time though I'm glad I got a launch copy of the game so that I have the proper version with the real Hamura to play again in the future (perfect for a platinum trophy run) as I really don't like the thought of them changing the best character in the game. But I also love the game far too much to see it just fail because of one person. So, rock and a hard place.

It won't get cancelled; they'll fix it up, somehow.

I wouldn't worry, nor will it be delayed.

its not a easy topic. we all want to play japanese games and most of us like japanese games because they are different
than western games. but we have to remember that japan is also a different country.
they have completely different laws and moral views.
things that are okay in japan are not okay in europe or the us and vice versa.

we cant just pick the nice things we want and then refuse to accept the "bad" things.
every country has some irks and quirks. if there would be some kind of lawful worldwide moral codex,
like for example the US would dictate what is right or wrong and thats the law for everyone,
the japanese games would be gone.

we dont have to like everything about a country and their laws but we have to remember that its a part of the country.

It is a pretty easy topic though and the solution is pretty simple. Sega should do whatever is necessary in Japan and should move forward with the release in the West as planned. No delays, no cuts, no recasts. Then Sega are respecting the different values of Japan AND the West.

the problem is that they would still earn money with this character and in Japan you dont want to earn money
with a product that is connected to any lawbreaking if you operate a big and well known company.
thats what i mean, its a different view on things. and this is a japanese game made for Japan,
then translated for everyone else. so their main focus is Japan. decisions that are made in the HQ in Tokyo also apply to the other locations. they can stop everything if they want to. thats how it is.

they replaced a character in the Yakuza 4 PS4 port too and when they release the game in the west,
we will receive the same version.

So we're fucked then and screw anyone who either didn't get a chance to buy the Japanese version or is waiting for the Western release? Fuuuck :(

if the HQ in Tokyo decides to go the hard way then we are fucked yes.
our only chance is that the member of the game studio, the member of Sega Japan and the member of Sega US / EU
can come to an agreement that makes clear that Japan and the west are two different things.
