What Movie Are You Watching?

I don’t believe I remembered to go over my viewing of the Mario bros movie, but then it didn’t leave much of an impression. I didn’t hate it, certainly enjoyable, and I’m one to be suckered in by references, but I’d echo previous comments about it feeling like a lot of noise and not much substance unfortunately. Definitely found the Sonic movies to have a bit more depth, which makes me sad I’ve heard news they haven’t even started filming the third one yet. I’d also say, I had enjoyed Detective Pikachu more as well, and it makes me curious as to what the new game may be like.

Today I’d gone to see Asteroid City with my folks. It was on recommendation from a friend, apparently by a director I ought to see more from eventually. Previews kinda had a Marwen vibe to them, the movie itself was definitely skewed s but more towards Twin Peaks and Rubber. Since it’s still new I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, but I found it really funny and entertaining on a surface level, as well as having enough depth underneath it to leave me thinking on it for some time I’m sure. Perhaps not directly, but some of the more serious bits had me think of works like Paranoia Agent or Rule of Rose in some fashion.

Same friend wants to see Oppenheimer, and had seen a preview or two for it myself. I’m a bit worried it could just be straight but I have a feeling it there may be more to it. Will probably be back in here when that time comes.

EDIT* Oh hell, I'll just post the video :

Just watched Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

As the franchise is now owned by Disney, I fully expected the injection of their ideological beliefs as we've seen in nearly every Disney movie over the last few years. I expected a train wreck and the destruction of this beloved series of globe trotting adventures.

Happy to say, the planets aligned and we actually got a good Indiana Jones movie, unscathed by ideological indoctrination. It's even better than the 4th movie, though that's not difficult to do. Sure, there are a couple things I could nitpick, but all in all... very enjoyable. A good send off for the series and Harrison Ford, as I believe he announced this to be the last movie he was doing.

I recommend it if you're looking for some solid adventuring.

/\ i also saw Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, today.

no where as bad as people are saying but not amazing. a solid 7/10 film.

i didn't notice any "woke" stuff. phoebe waller-bridge's character isn't trying to be the next indiana jones, she's a thief. after watching this movie, it just reminds me how leaks are just complete nonsense.. i mean there was a "leak" which said indiana jones met his younger self and died saving phoebe waller-bridge.. there is no way that could of happened in this story lol.

i think indiana jones will live on in games rather than tv/movie spin offs

Absolutly! I was even terrified in the cinema that that would happen! So I have to see it twice to enjoy it more :D

Good movie (not great) but with a lot of heart! A lot of heart!

missions impossible dead reckoning part1, was pretty good.

i would give it a solid 8/10

not going to spoil anything but one of the first gun battles was awesome. they do a great job on these movies and tom cruise never fails to create something enjoyable to watch, it's much better than the last one. i would say, it's worth watching if your into action films.

..a bit geeky but i got some strong metal gear solid vibes from some scenes / music.

one general complaint about cinema movies is that they are getting too long and the next film i see ( oppenheimer) i'm not going to drink or eat anything because i keep finding the last 30mins of these films, im thinking about running off to the toilet rather than keeping up with the film plot. (maybe it's just these stupid fizzy drinks)

I'm a pretty big Mission Impossible fan and was anticipating just waiting to buy this one on disc when it released. I also heard that it's a two parter. Does it just end on a cliff hanger and expect viewers to wait a year like so many other movies? Is it worth it to see it now vs when the second is closer to release?

Keep in mind the recent writters and actors strike. I doubt it will last a year, Ron Pearlman already has burning desires and Will Smith is training his sonic slap but still there's gonna be a dry season this autumn.

Oh, I'm not worried about Mission Impossible's sequel. It was stated to be a two parter months ago, so I expect it could be in the hands of the post production team now; not impacted by the strikes.

no spoilers. i didn't but i would recommend rewatching the first mission impossible film before dead reckoning as the stories are a little bit linked. there is flashbacks but i think if i had rewatched the first film, i would of felt stronger about the plot.. if that makes sense.

yes there is a cliff hanger but it isn't that bad, it doesn't ruin the film or anything.i'm definitely interested in seeing part 2 ( 2024?). i 100% recommend watching it in the cinema. actions films are starting to get a bit boring but this film feels fresh.

the only film i recommend waiting to watching back to back, is dune part 1/2. dune part 1, (2021) felt like a waste of time watching in the cinema.

ron pearlman is great. i love his rant at that super rich studio executive who wanted to drag out the strikes so people would loose there homes.

reminds me of when george lucus explained in a documentary how pissed off the studio execs were, when he cut them out star wars the empire strikes back. lol ( i think he funded the film himself ).

Just picked up the new Resident Evil movie that revolves around Jill's recovery after being brainwashed by Wesker. About time they laid that out. I won't have time to watch till this weekend, but I'm looking forward too it. I'll let you guys know how it is.

Oddly enough, could only find the steelbook version for the 4K release. Oh well. I like the cover better.

I liked every RE CGI movie and its unfair the treatment some people are giving it due timing with Hollywood strike. Its not AI made, doesnt use any real person face and above all It has been some time in development now.
Meaning, its possible to support the strikes and like this productions as well.

i saw oppenheimer at the cinema today.

i dont really know what to think of it. it's a intense historical / art movie and it's entertaining..but don't know if i would recommend it to everyone.

the movie is very much through the eyes of oppenheimer, so there is no footage of ww2 or dropping of the bomb on japan and the story jumps around quite a lot.

all the actors are good, but i'm starting to get a little bit tired of florence pugh, she's ok and has a pretty face but i don't really understand why hollywood is determined to make her into a sex symbol.

i think i would give this film 7.5/10.

Watched RE Death Island last night. I enjoyed it but not as much as the previous, Vendetta. I wish they would have explained more of the aftermath of Jill working through RE5's events. They had such an opportunity to make this incredible but it was just... OK.

Still, not bad. Most the fan favorites are there... Jill, Chris, Claire, Leon and Rebecca. I give it a C+ to B-.

Boo, L'Avventura! An absolutely awful, overrated film that is celebrated for stupid merits, I really don't like Antonioni lol. THe Passenger is better but even then, so much of it is inefficient filmmaking: L'Avventura is even worse though.

Tell me about Lady Street Fighter, BC! :D

Not gonna lie, I think I *have* to like L'Avventura, because it's such an important film. That said, it's pretty fucking boring at times. I will admit that watching it a 2nd time around, it has improved in many respects and once you accept that it's almost like a film out of focus with its initial plot, then it's pretty interesting. It's a bloody difficult watch though; especially on a hot summer's evening when my concentration is poor at the best of times. I reminds me of a lot of Godard movies where I feel sad because I feel "unintelligent" for not enjoying the film. But I watch lots of arty films that if I don't enjoy it, I can respect it (Satantango is certainly one of those films...)

As for Lady Street Fighter; it's a low (no) budget film. Ineptly acted, crudely directed. It's fucking awful...and yet, there's such a sincere charm to it that even though it's a piece of shit, I had fun watching it with mates. It's like they wanted to make something good, but were just simply not good at it. And I really admire that, especially in the 70's and 80's. I can't stand modern "terrible on purpose" films as the post-irony era has long stopped being fun. With these old films, all the special effects and action were real. Nowadays it's all cheap CGI. It's hard to explain, but hope that makes sense.

On the other hand, The Curious Dr Hummp is another no/low budget film (frankly a porn film masquerading as a horror film), but that was such shlocky fun!

i saw the creator at the cinema today. quite an entertaining sci-fi movie. i would give it a 7.5/10

the film has got elements of rouge one, blade runner 2049 and akira. i would recommend it if your into sci-fi movies.
one thing i did find funny is that the same guy who does the voice over work for the ancient aliens tv show, does some work for this film.

trailer-
