I'll go into greater detail once I'm actually ready to put the game down for a long while
What I enjoy:
- I like that training is important in this game and you have more to do instead of just sparring and shadow fighting.
- This is the only Shenmue game that has given me enough activities to lose my in-game days in.
- I like the way the economy is set up by incorporating tokens/gambling into making money/getting items and clothes and moves
- I like Bailu and Chobu as locations
- What new tracks are there I like for the most part
What I dislike:
- The villains
- the Final segment/Ending
- lack of fleshed out characters besides Ryo and Shenhua
- Jobs pay to little. Making gambling the best way to make money. With how important money is in this installment I wish there was a steady reliable way to bring in the cash.
- The Combat is just a huge flop imo.
- overall the story is very weak imo compared to the previous games
Nitpicks:
- Music doesn't loop in a lot of places
- Chobu needs waaaaay more NPC's
- Stamina doesn't bother me to much but I feel it doesn't add anything positive to the game
- A lot of features I was looking forward to did not make it into the game. I put it as a nitpick since I don't know why these ideas were scrapped yet.
- A lot of the prizes cost to many damn tokens.
In closing: Shenmue 3 is something I can enjoy as a fan but it is flawed in areas that matter most. The characters, Villains, Story, and combat. I enjoy having a shenmue experience that actually gives me plenty to do with my days. for the first time I am planing out what to do. "today I will focus on fishing and training" "tomorrow I will focus on gathering herbs and gambling". It's nice to be back in this world but while I consider it a more fun game than Shenmue 1 thats largely thanks to all of the side activities and not the core of the game so I don't consider it to be better than it. And its not holding a candle to Shenmue 2 for sure.
I hope now that the ground work is there, Yu can really focus on making Shenmue 4 a masterpiece on par with 1 and 2.
