Random Shenmue Thoughts

Always thought this was a pretty good trailer for Shenmue II. I've been toying with the idea of remaking it using the re-release but video editing is so time consuming.
I already did that prior to the ports being announced:

It was more time consuming than I initially expected, spent probably over 40 hours on it. But now I know where almost all of the source material is from so doing it again with footage from these versions wouldn't take as long. Probably won't happen though, given there wouldn't be much value in doing it again. I could update it though to replace the few clips I had to substitute, and the short 2-3 seconds that had to be upscaled from 480p due to me being unable to trigger that scene in a short amount of time. I had also proposed on the old forums doing a remixed version after Shenmue I & II was announced mixing clips from both games, but nobody replied to that expressing interest in the idea so I dropped it.

The Shenmue 1 introduction video from the Dreamcast magazine disc would be a neat one to remaster next, but the ideal timeframe for that would be prior to release and I don't think I could do it in time. (Not to mention some footage like the magic weather scene can't be reproduced easily because it's not from a cutscene)

I was wondering how many swallow flips(The last move you learn in Shenmue 1) it takes to defeat Chai?

I managed to kick his legs out from under him and flip him,but I couldn't do the finishing punch.

I was only able to land the punch once I think, there's no way to practice the timing so unlike arm break fire(which you can practice often) it's very hard to pull off...

Kick moves, blocks and grabs seem to do the trick. I'm looking forward to save anywhere in Shenmue I so I can finally beat his arse in the arcade.

Anyone thinks they will add controller vibration in the re-releases? I'm gearing towards no but i'm curious what yall think.

Wasn't aware of this, great work!

When it comes to making videos this is always the case in my experience. It's why I'm reluctant to get back into editing and machinima making.

There was a one clip I wasn't sure about, maybe you could help. Is the one of Ryo looking up taken from failing the plank QTE or somewhere else?

Shame, I think if a big enough push was made this kind of thing could generate some interest.

Another great video I wanted to see remastered but didn't even consider because of the reasons you've outlined.

If you're talking about Ryo looking up near the end where the camera circles around, yes, it's the one that only plays once you fall from planks in the Ghost Hall Building. Actually had to record that one myself because Mr357's Shenmue 2 movie did not have that scene. And it's kind of odd that you only see it if you fall, since it would have been a good introduction to the building as the scene basically pretends that you didn't fall and just die.

I've been having second thoughts after that last post and was thinking about making one prior to release anyway. Same video, with the logo replaced and some Shenmue 1 clips mixed in. My biggest hesitation is the same thing Sega has to deal with in their own trailers though, if I'm making a video for Shenmue 1 & 2 I should letterbox everything as to not mislead people who see the trailer and want to buy the game as a result. As a fan though, I'd want the trailer fullscreen 60fps like the one I did before the re-releases were announced. I have a good solution now though - 2 versions, where the primary one is 30fps and matches the letterbox style of the recent trailers with the Shenmue background, and an unlisted 60fps fullscreen version linked separately. I'll see what I can throw together in a weekend.

What's Shenmue would have been interesting but the problem with that is that it lacks a English dub since it was never released in the west so it would've been weird to have the demo sub only and the full game with dual audio.

It would have been amazing if they had also worked on the What's Shenmue? Demo and released it for free with the August PS plus line up or just a free demo in general before the game drops.

It wouldn't have been a bad idea at all but they probbaly didn't have the time or weren't commissioned for it.

Yes I can see your point here. However I think it could have worked if they had a little note at the end with a features list of the new games.

Okay, so I attempted this over the weekend and today but decided it wasn't a good idea after all. Here is the outcome before I gave up on it:

I used Sega's footage for Shenmue 1 since they had already extracted some good clips. The biggest problem is that there isn't a lot of room to inject Shenmue 1 clips. They baked a lot of sound effects & voice acting into the original audio track, and I can't remove any of it to make room for additional Shenmue 1 footage without the audio for those sections sounding poor as a result. You can't completely isolate the appropriate sounds, nor can you copy from other areas of the song to mask them.

Next, for the clips I did use some of them just look out of place. Some of this is due to the framerate weirdness on Sega's original videos that others have already pointed out, but it's also hard to pick clips that don't look unusual after being used to the original video. The character substitutions at the beginning are okay, and so was using the Lan Di scene from the first game at the end, but I just don't like the other changes. It was a neat idea, but ultimately it was flawed because there's too much good stuff that is difficult to replace, so it would end up being very heavy on Shenmue II footage either way.

If anyone disagrees and would like to see this version shared anyway, I'm willing to make it public. But it's basically a final draft of what didn't work. Given the unfinished nature of it, I did not shrink the footage to re-create the double-letterboxed appearance of Shenmue II (2018) cutscenes.

Good going. Much better than $ega’s trailer. (y)

Have there been any leaks yet?

I worked at GameStop for a long time as a manager. Usually, most games that have leaks before release date are games that have a hard street date, which means stores get and hold the product until that time.

It is usually marked in GS' system by SD 11/11/18 or something. Most games leaked before SD are usually from Wal-Mart or folks leaking copies to friends or regular, loyal customers in the store.

The reaction to the leaks is a bit OTT. It happens with pretty much every game that isn't a major release (one exception to that rule though is Pokemon X and Y). Alright guys... It's just a port, calm down. It's not like anything's going to get ruined or spoiled, Jesus Christ. I understand from a legal standpoint, but that's as far as my understanding goes.

Anyways, I'll no doubt have the game in a couple of days too. I can't wait to play it and hope I don't go to hell for the horrific crime of playing a game a few days early.

Sega have made it very clear that no footage is to be aired until they say so.

It's simple, port or not, no footage is to be shared and if it is then we will issue a permanent ban and delete the footage.
