Random Shenmue III Thoughts

With Shenmue 3 going off the PS Store I just took a moment to preserve some of the images used on the store, I'll post them here (Sorry in advance):

Shen3DLC-CDC.PNG
Shen3DLC-DDE.PNG
Shen3DLC-SQP.PNG
Shen3DLC-BMC.PNG
Shen3DLC-BR.PNG
Shen3DLC-BS.PNG

Once again, sorry for the mass upload but these a great assets which could be handy! That's all i could find on the PS Store with Google searching.

With the Switch 2 Direct tomorrow, is anyone expecting any Shenmue III news?
...Because I'm sure not. Regrettably. I do think it will come to Switch 2, but it may be still a ways off. ININ is a great publishing company, but the event wouldn't seem to favor them.

Tried looking a bit, but couldn't find one. Does anybody have maps for Bailu and Niaowu that are similar in quality to the maps in Shenmue II that are posted around the city?

EDIT: An image of the maps from the notebook would be amazing. Wondering if these exist as a texture without the notebook perforations?

Oh boy I wonder what it could be.....

Starts at 25:00 BTW.

So same usual complaints, the story, stamina system and the excessive padding.

All things I can mostly agree with it but it's funny how rare it is somebody outright says they dislike or hate the game. In the end it's not a bad game, and most people who play it know it.

Shenmue 3 was a victim of it's own hype, has for the game being "slow" I mean yeah it's shenmue, that's kind of the point.

Maybe after all those years and it's groundbreaking reputation, shenmue 3 was never going to live up to most expectations also due to how much the industry has changed and how much time has passed. It's like a gem of a bygone era that was never going to please everyone.

Also the minigames in shenmue 3 were good, just because it wasn't sega minigames so what? They were still a lot of fun and some real love and attention was poured to them.

Still, he ends saying how the story was the bigger dissapointment, and yeah im on with him at that. Whatever problems the game has they are all far overshadowed by the lack of story progression, character development and really bad story design choices.

I think his points are almost all reasonable. He said it was a good, enjoyable game, just not a great one.

I think the point about it not being innovative is a bit weak, because I can almost guarantee that if the game had a more compelling story with less downtime, the level of innovation wouldn't matter at all. I think the vast majority of us were looking for a traditional Shenmue game, after all.

The only point I call BS on is the graphics being "barely a step up from the Dreamcast games" or whatever he said. S3 can be stunning in places, and clearly generations beyond the Dreamcast. However, it managed to keep the vibrancy of DC games which I appreciate.

Isn't it time they start putting Shenmue 3 in the video for highly hated games that aren't bad at all? :)

Of the 100 other games I've played in the last 10 years, I haven't replayed a single one... And I've replayed Shenmue 3 four times.

I understand that the game is super convenient for video clips with such a theme... Partly because of the high expectations.

I can't believe why no one praises it for having so many different NPCs, where you can't meet twins for example. I'm starting to get really annoyed with youtubers. No one says the positive things about the game and they have the audacity to even talk about the quality of the NPCs. :D Dude, are you blind? You can't see that there are over 300 different NPCs? No game has that many.

I can't understand why so many so-called "fans" lie with excuses like "In Shenmue 2 you can talk to every NPC, but in Shenmue 3 you can't"? .... Even if you don't remember what it was like before, can't you check? I just don't get it. Is the 18 year wait the reason for so much discrepancy in these reviews? Why are they making up untrue things? And they forget to mention the better economy and how many more items there are to collect... Every item has a description, etc.

Just watched the Game Sack episode, I think he’s fair in his criticisms really, ends on a positive and doesn’t outright slag the game off. He’s the only thing I watch on YouTube really, Dojo aside.

I wonder if the internet at large will ever get tired of moaning about Shenmue 3? I enjoy the game a shitload, as I’ve said many times, and I respect the opinions people that don’t like it raise here, but thankfully they’re all seemingly sensible people and none of the daft SHEBMUE 3 IS BAD V TERRIBLE CAK GANE stuff that crops up any time it’s mentioned in certain other places.

Its a game that is popular and "acceptable" to hate on. Lives on infamy. It's a shame since there are way worse games out there, much much worse.

Youtubers are a desperate lot, trying to cobble together some income by commenting on other peoples' work. Unfortunately the algorithm rewards negativity. That dude in particular is a castoff from the old Kikizo forums. Gotta poke the fanbases to get that engagement.

Lots of Shenmue 2 NPCs had not much to say. Many were just glorified sign posts escorting you to where you need to go next. Shenmue 3 NPCs had way more personality.

Shenmue 3 felt like it leaned into the strengths of Shenmue 1- a detailed world and memorable NPCs instead of going for Shenmue 2's epic story and scope.

In a weird way with Shenmue 3 we kinda got a sequel to Shenmue 1 but what we really wanted and needed was to continue Shenmue 2.

A few years back, I made the "Unpopular Games" thread to prove that taste is subjective. That just because I dislike Shenmue III, it does not elevate my opinions above anyone else. I am sure there are people here who dislike the Star Wars Prequel trilogy, but I think they are flawed masterpieces. For video games, Metal Gear Solid V and Final Fantasy XV were disliked by veteran fans, but they are some of my favorites of all time. In this increasingly polarized world, I wish we could focus more on what unites us instead of divides us.

We may have different opinions on Shenmue, but we are all Shenmue fans.

I agree with you about the prequels. MGSV was cool but I stopped playing when I realized the game was unfinished and the second chapter was just the same missions from chapter 1.

And yeah opinions are subjective.

But there's clearly something wrong with Shenmue 3 and that's because no Shenmue fan.. literally no Shenmue fan dislikes 1 or 2. But 3 split the fanbase down the middle.

My position is that S3 is just as good as 1 and 2, it's just incomplete just like MGS5. I don't believe S3 is inherently flawed it's just missing a ton of content that was supposed to be in it and I think the complaints about the food stamina system are overblown.

Oh my god this is well said.

Know something, this gets kind of overlooked. I still love shenmue 2 and I understand why it would have been impossible to have so many detailed npcs but it still holds true.

The ones that are there though? Are pretty good, I think in a way the photo mode is a way to help you screen out the best characters in the game you don't find in the story.

Shenmue 3 details were better, but they could have done a lot more tbh especially when it came to giving them better routines. And it's mostly from Bailu because in niaowu the npcs are pretty weak in my opinion.

Fundamental truths, my friend. Well spoken.
We are all shenmue fans, reason I like this place is has a fanbase there's a lot more love than hate here and I like a lot that people kind of peacefully debate the series 99% of the time which is Very rare to find in an online Fanbase.

That's all it's about for me, discussing things you like/love with others. Not getting into arguments, insults, I love this more than you! And all the toxic stuff that is so common in fandom ( and here it's kept to an absolute minimum so congrats on us has a community).

Its the story for sure, Shenmue 3 is a good game overall (not perfect but good). There's very little wrong with it has a "game".

Graphics look great
All the engines run properly
The mechanics are all functional and enjoyable
The game world and athmosphere is pretty decent

The fighting engine works well, its still shenmue. But its when it comes to the story beats that it falls apart.

Also 100%, most people never understood that the stamina isnt an issue at all if you just spent some time training which is something the game ACTIVELY is trying to get you to do.

What people don’t understand about the mandatory food and training system in Shenmue 3 is that you ALWAYS had to do unfun work stuff in Shenmue. Needing to get a full time job and the curfew/allowance in Shenmue 1. Needing to air out the books everyday in Shenmue 2. Real life chores and life sim limitations were always a thing.
