There was a recent feature in Edge. Paraphrasing here:
Yu Suzuki cannot stop himself from adding more and more to his games, which made development very difficult.
Suzuki's background in arcade gaming and didn't work with planning documents, which made development difficult.
He acknowledges how important Shenmue was, but basically begged to be taken off the team because it was so stressful. He says Sega's CEO basically begged him to help get the game finished.
