ININ Games is the New Publisher of Shenmue 3

I know the Itoi - san conversation is laughed at a lot, but I never saw why. If all you listen to is "Years ago, I was Chinese..." then it sounds weird, but context tells you to listen to the very next line about how he's become a naturalized Japanese citizen, and is seemingly proud of it. Never found that one to be strange to me at all.
Well it’s strange because we think of Chinese as being a racial thing. But he’s talking about he was of Chinese nationality but changed to being a Japanese citizen.

I don’t mind which language they focus on. I do think “bad” VA should be avoided as much as possible but that’s kind of a moot point 4 games in. It’s part of the series’ identity. Anything they can do to lighten the team’s work load or give them more budget to take from one area and focus on other improvements is a good idea.
I don't think it's too late to improve the quality of the VO for a 4th game. There wouldn't be many legitimate complaints from fans if the game had really good VO, and it'd give the game a better chance of success.

Honestly, most of the characters in S3 were solidly voiced, if a little exaggerated, and a huge step up from the Dreamcast games. Unfortunately, the localisation didn't really improve along with it, and there were key characters, like Shenhua, who kinda ruin it (I don't blame the voice actor).

The biggest issue with Shenmue’s English dub has always been the awkward localization and poor direction. Bring in a few native speakers to read through the script before sending it out to the voice actors and a proven director, and the difference would be quite dramatic.

It's a big ask to make English the primary dub (even though I generally agree with your reasoning) because Suzuki and most of the dev team are not native English speakers. Shenmue is in the unique position of having both a ton of fully voiced dialogue and being budget starved, so there is a high likelihood that it will still have awkward localization and poor direction even if English is the only dub. Other games with similar scope have certain advantages like Final Fantasy (giant team/budget) and Persona/Yazkuza (not fully voiced, limited lip syncing issues, still bigger budget).

I think what goes hand in hand with the VO is the overall tone of the game. Shenmue's english dub, imo, fundamentally alters the tone of the story and that, more than anything else, is why I prefer to play in Japanese. It's entirely possible to match the tone with the English dub but it just seems like that's more difficult/expensive to achieve.

Yes, which is how I have always interpreted it, and thus never saw the problem.

I've always liked the English voices, admittedly there are some goofy ones and some not so good performances, but I unironically like it, especially the first two games. I think it's one of those things that is Cool To Hate, even though I have heard many people in real life talk way more unnaturally and weird...maybe that is because I am in the midwestern USA.

I love the English VA of all three games! Regardles of English being a more popularly spoken language, though, the native language of the writer/director should be utilized in a compromise for resources. Great idea earlier in thread being an optional DLC i think sounds reasonable.

Hoping they give us some new information soon. The months have been going by fast, at least before the summer ends.
It’s pushing half a year since the announcement.

I mean back in the old days you’d get a teaser trailer for a big movie 1 year out. So at the very latest we will have news by the end of this year.

But how much more time will be have to wait between when the news breaks and when the ports/remaster/directors cut or whatever is actually released?

Since it's a new partnership I believe it's pretty reasonable to expect them to say something by the end of the year maximum. Later than that and it's really starting to push it.

But im hoping by summer season they will say at least something of meaning.

Good question, I hope and expect whatever it is their going to announce that they are already putting some good work on it.

So when they announce it, it shouldn't be unreasonably long until we get something (probably ports).

Switch 2 is coming around isn't it?

Part of me thinks the longer the wait, the better the news is going to be.

Could just be kidding myself.
It's a safe bet I believe to expect some ports of shenmue 3 and/or potentially an improved version of shenmue 3 ( not a major overhaul).

Anything more than that, Shenmue 4, big content expansions etc is pretty unlikely but i guess we can always have hope.

Their at least in a good enough position to conceptualize, pre plan shenmue IV, research and going into an early pre production of sorts. If Ys net could get additional funding/interest from a third partner they could well put it off.

Performance improvements and ports are all I’m expecting realistically. I guess these things take time - I don’t imagine they’re something that can be done in a couple of weeks or so.

But then there’s always the little flicker at the back of my mind thinking, the longer the wait, the more work has gone into whatever it is, so maybe the bigger the news.

Guess waiting for Switch 2 is the obvious one. But who knows just now, could be linked to the future of the series, is what I genuinely hope but also genuinely doubt.

Suppose I’m repeating myself a bit.

Same thing. Its all they implied and hinted at.

It could be, they might be planning something else, its not out of question.

Tbh theres plenty that could be done with the series and not just Shenmue IV which is still going to take a while.

Imagine if they revealed an episodic Shenmue 4 or something huge.

I was thinking that. What if he get the rest of the story through new DLC chapters?

It wouldnt be out of the question since its a smaller commitment and risk releasing episodes instead of an entire game.

Shenmue IV being episodic is definitely something to consider. Theres a bunch of different things and ways they could try to push the series forward realistically.

Whatever it is they are doing, I hope it's going to be revealed soon. Feels like these months are just going by more without any news..I for one actually enjoyed Shenmue 3 despite it's flaws. I hope and want to put faith in ININ to do a good job with the game so it gets more love this time instead of all the criticism it got.

Improved performances would be good but it would be great if the flaws of the game were more addressed. No idea what they are cooking though...
