General RGG Discussion

I introduced myself to the yakuza series with 0 at some time last year, I'd always been curious about the games and even though I had heard the comparisons in some ways to Shenmue, I didn't really go in expecting that same experience which was probably the best. I will say that, the story itself took me a while to get into completely. I've never been massively into games where the cut-scenes are overly long and the first hour or so of Yakuza 0 had a lot of that. But then I was instantly won over by all of the mini games and the absurdity of a lot of the different sidequests throughout the game. I ultimately stopped playing, until Yakuza 6 came out and I picked that up...Sort of ended up playing that for most of the first part of this year. I felt like in the battle of dad simulators, it had me hooked a little more than God Of War.

My main experience with the Yakuza games is that I tend to play them until i get bored of the slightly repetitive nature that can come with them, put it down for a couple of weeks, or months, come back to the game and start playing again, which is where I end up wondering why I ever stopped playing in the first place because they're just so bloody mad and fun...until they're not. I just repeat that process from this point on. I definitely have a lot of love for the games.

Ono...Michio!

I have been playing Yakuza 0 for the past month. I'm still at chapter 7 but recently there was an instance when Majima arrives at the Grand and is told by staff that a chinese man is in a booth on the floor area, and wanted to meet him. (don't think that spoils anything)
Then, you're prompted to press R2 to follow (locking on) the clerk up to the man.

I wonder, this is such a small inconsequencial instance, and it hadn't appeared in the game before.. plus the fact you're following someone to meet a chinese man... could this be a nod and a wink to Shenmue II's feature of following people?

Seems like an otherwise needless feature, as it's a very short walk, about 10 seconds long.

I have to say that Yakuza 0 looks stunning for the PC and playing in 60 FPS is a joy. It took a bit of patience, first thoughts playing were the graphics are stunning and lots of colors, gameplay felt a bit repetitive but with enough time, I'd say the story is solid and I am starting to feel more into the game so I am certainly glad I picked this up. I look forward to Kiwami as well.20180803233914_1.jpg

i think Yakuza 6 will probably look the best on PC because there is no anti aliasing at all on the PS4
and everything looks really really really unclean and unsteady.
also its the only game (besides Kiwami 2) that isnt running in 60 fps on the PS4 (Pro).
its even worse on the normal PS4 because you get screen tearing + sub 30 fps.

Literally just bought Yakuza 0 last night, got to the first phone booth. So far I'm really digging it. I have no experience with Yakuza and I enjoy the Shenmue`esque feel.

BTW add me on Steam, csmakio

What's everyone's favorite title in the series? As I said, I rank 0 right up there as one of SEGA's best games. The rest are great, but 0 is just on another level.

Favourite is 3, always will be.

5 is the best in the series and nothing has dethroned it yet!

And again, that's opinion.

I (and only 2 others, I've come across) have had 0 screen tearing or any slowdown issues, aside from the batting cage interlude, in the entirety of 6 and I have a stock, launch-day PS4.

But yes, I also agree that 0 will look best on PC, as will HgG.

I'm playing Yakuza 0 right now, thanks to the PC release (which is really really good, 21:9 ultrawide support is much appreciated). Well, it's really really good. I played 3 and 4 before and really liked them. Storytelling has always been great.

Yakuza 2 is my favorite. Love the original engine and am a HUGE 6th gen loyalists. Fantastic characters and story,

Ah, and it happens again...
in chapter 10 .... in Little Asia as you go on your way to see "master/elder" Chen. Too much coincidence?

That first Miracle Johnson side story was side splitting. My god all the references and off shoots of Micheal Jackson and Steven Spielberg, and Kazumas reaction. I am still early in the games side stories, but that was an early gem. I forgot how caught up I get in doing side stories when I play theses, I usually dont advance the story until I have done all the side stories, such a good laugh blow off some steam beating down delinquent thugs.

I just got to chapter 4 playing as Goro and wow the story has really picked up. I am now a Yakuza fan.

i'm not really an emotional guy and i wont spoil anything but the whole ending of Yakuza 0
is one of the best videogame endings ever in my opinion. it had a really unexpected impact on me.

The ending is brilliant, mostly for how quiet it is. I absolutely love this game.

^^And yet the final boss is brilliant, mostly for how much of a down-and-dirty, in-your-goddamn-face brawl it is.
Nice to have a game that can do both quiet and loud so well in its narrative.

@Mr. OL As well as absurd, funny things without it ruining the serious main story. I always liked that about the Yakuza series. Metal Gear Solid is another example that manages this I think. Japanese games do this maybe a bit more often in general.
By the way, I wondered yesterday if you would show up here or if I had maybe missed it.

I think that comparing this to Shenmue would not really be valid and does not really feel at all like the game (something I have heard frequently).
I like both series but have always found them to be quite different when you start looking beyond the setting. There are similarities but Shenmue focuses a bit more on creating the feeling of daily life, time passing, NPC's that can be approached so they're not just there as background elements, ... Yakuza on the other hand has more action, a bit more traditional leveling up while keeping some of these life elements.
Favourite is 3, always will be.

That's an opinion you don't see often. I also liked Yakuza 3 but many seem to dislike it. I actually thought that parts of the game felt more like Shenmue than most of the other games. Specifically the slower pacing when you're at the orphanage. Yakuza 5 is also great, I replayed it not too long ago.
