My other thread gave me this idea, obviously this would be mostly speculation since we know almost nothing or very little about the characters on the list but that's where the fun lies right? In Speculation. I put characters who haven't really been defeated or who have a chance in growth since we last saw them, no point adding Iwao when we know he was beaten by Lan Di for example? Unless you think that fight was unfair.

Who is the No. 1 fighter in Shenmue so far and why?

And if you're feeling up to it, you can do a top 10 list.

If your pick isn't in the poll comment it instead.

Well Lan Di's wiped the floor with Ryo in every encounter we've seen, so why's he on it? I will say though that Lan Di is essentially a "win by any means necessary" type guy, so it'd have to be him for me. I get that winning a fight doesn't necessarily make you more skilled a combatant (for example a straight-up human fight between Green Arrow and Sentry would be a landslide victory for GA), but we haven't any reason to believe that anyone we've actually seen thus far could possible defeat him.

I’d say Xiuying is just as strong (if not stronger) than Lan Di. Her calm demeanor adds to her strength, she doesn’t make any rash decisions while in a fight.

Of all the characters we've met, Lan Di and Xiuying are in the running for the strongest; Niao Sun and Ziming are likely to be at a similar level too.

However, Zhu Yuanda considered Zhao Sunming "the master of Tiger Swallow Style" in his Wulinshu.

It's probable that Lan Di learned from his father, with Sunming having many years more experience. So I'd say Sunming would be the best fighter in Shenmue, were he a) actually in Shenmue, and b) not dead.

You know what what if Lan Di thinks he's dead but he's not? I can't remember if it was confirmed he's definitely dead?

As of the end of Shenmue 2 I would say Lan Di. But I don't think it'll stay that way by the time Suzukis vision of Shenmue is completed.
Do you think Ryo would be the best by the end? or perhaps someone else?

Also what level would you guys say Ren is? Could he give Ryo a fight? Could he beat Dou Niu if he tried? I can see Lan Di killing Ren Krillen style lol

@DoubleO_Ren I reckon Ryo's strength and inevitable "victory" will lie in the allies he's made along the way. Iwao's final words will ring true beyond the apparent betrayal, and serve more as a personal revelation for Ryo when he realises he can't do it alone.

So for me, he won't be the strongest physically, but will be in atrongest better situation as he'll have a "team" of specialists rather than an army of minions.

Basically Shenmue is Japan's answer to the Avengers.

I'm agreeing with Mittens - remember that Iwao's last words were "Keep friends, those you love, close to you..." Ryo will suffer losses due to keeping his distance from people, and gather strength by bringing them closer again.

But at the same time, the series needs to end with Ryo beating Lan Di. Any other conclusion would be unsatisfying.

Ren is not a martial artist; while he can certainly handle his own against mooks he'd lose in a fight against anyone with any real skill. Even Yamagishi might be able to take him on (under the rules of martial arts movies, where physical strength is second to kung fu).

Or Naruto Shippuden towards the end

I dunno I feel Ren is more of a scrapper than he looks, kinda like Miguel in Tekken, he's a street fighter with brawling moves and no discipline but his brute strength and survivors will keeps him on par with the Kazuya's and Law's or you could compare Ren to Bronn from Game of Thrones, Bronn has no discipline but he is street wise and knows how to survive, I imagine Ren would be very similar to Bronn but yes definitely would get his ass whooped in a situation where he would be forced to fight with honor. Same reason Bronn avoided the fight with the mountain would be the same way Ren would avoid a fight with Lan Di.
TL.DR

Ren would kick Yamagashi's San's ass albiet unconventionally.

It seems clear that Lan Di and Lishao Tao are on a whole different level than everyone else we've seen fight. I can't wait to see how these confrontations will pan out...

It's interesting that Lan Di has only performed a couple of basic moves and he's already seen as the best fighter in Shenmue, I don't disagree I just think it's interesting the power of word of mouth, high praise and fear is. For all we know Iwao might have been holding back as to not want to hurt Zhao's son and Ryo was just not good enough at that point to take on Lan Di, Lan Di's strength could just be good marketing by others in the game :p

I'd put it more down to the efficiency of his "basic moves". I mean, here we have Iwao Hazuki, who we've learned has trained with quite a few highly-skilled fighters, and whilst age could definitely have been a factor in this, Lan Di absolutely schooled the bloke, with devastating precision.

As said by someone else too, the fact he's calm as fuck throughout just makes him even more chilling. Plus those eyebrows... anyone who says that people "aren't born evil" are just flat out wrong when you crawl out of your mam's flaps with eyebrows looking like that!
