List Your Top Favourite Games of ALL TIME!

It's been more than four years since I last posted in this thread and my top games have changed pretty significantly after replaying many of them. Oh, and I'm going to start including collections, but I may notate my favorite in that collection in the comment for it. Here's my updated list:

1. Uncharted Collection (PS4)
Uncharted-2-Among-Thieves-Remastered-Ch-21-Crushing-All-Treasure.00_04_05_07.Still001-1024x576.png

Still holding out in the number 1 spot is Uncharted with the second game being at the top. With my interest in modern gaming waning significantly, I don't see this changing... well.... ever. Why is it at the top though? I absolutely loved Indiana Jones growing up. The mystery of rediscovering ancient ruins or going after a mystical artifact nearly forgotten through time has only become more intriguing to me as I've aged. Tomb Raider helped continue that and Uncharted was a massive contributor. I'm also constantly watching treasure hunting documentary shows. The entire series has anywhere from good to incredible writing. Jaw dropping action scenes are abundant. The gameplay is fun and engaging... the thrill of kicking a bad guy in the face as he tries climbing up to where you're at. I mean... this series is just top notch. I sincerely hope rumors are true and we get another on PS5.

2. Mass Effect Legendary Edition (PS4)

Ah, Mass Effect. I had played this starting with the 2nd and moved directly into the 3rd right when the 3rd originally released on PS3. I remembered loving it but then it fell by the wayside of time. Fast forward to when they re-released it in the Legendary Edition on PS4 and it was basically all I played in 2021 for single player gaming. Took me nearly a year to replay all four games (Andromeda played separately obviously) and after replaying, the series easily takes it's place in the second spot. An incredible immersive universe to explore. Good writing and fun gameplay make this a must have for any sci-fi fans.

3. Resident Evil Remake (Gamecube / PS4)
RER-Comp-Image05-PC.jpg

I had been a huge fan of the Resident Evil series from it's start on PS1 all the way through RE5 on PS3 with it's incredible co-op and action. I was in the camp of those that preferred Resident Evil's move towards action during the PS2/3 days and didn't like it at all when it went first person horror only. Thus, I'm not a fan of the modern releases. Remake is still my favorite in the series. The graphics shown for Gamecube back in the day made my jaw hit the floor and I bought the system specifically for it. Still an incredible game to play.

4. Shenmue HD Collection & 3 (PS4)
ss_d42aceb532d120f4feb6e971075e93a2fea87ea1.1920x1080.jpg

This is the Shenmue Dojo. We all know it's special and why. I won't go into too many specifics but I found it incredible to find this community during the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter. I am honored to have been fortunate enough to be part of making Shenmue 3 happen and consider myself lucky to have been part of a once in a lifetime hype train for what was widely considered a dormant or even dead franchise. We can only hope to one day see some kind of conclusion to Ryo's journey.

5. Ninja Turtles Cowabunga Collection (PS4)
Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-The-Cowabunga-Collection---PlayStation-4

Never in a million years did I think this collection would happen, especially after Konami was dead for all intents and purposes. Getting to replay my childhood favorites in glorious HD... legally? It's so incredible. I thought these would be stuck on original systems or in Emulation for the rest of eternity. So glad to have this in my collection. Proud to say I completed each game earning the Platinum trophy.

Ok... with the top five out of the way, I'm going to simply list the remaining ones with no images or blurbs. It's getting to be lengthy and there are so many that deserve a nod. The rest in no particular order:

  • Jurassic Park (Genesis) - I'd love a Cowabunga like collection for these.
  • Zelda Twilight Princess (Gamecube) - Still waiting on a Switch port.
  • Sonic Origins Collection (PS4) - They should have added Sonic Spinball.
  • Tomb Raider [2013 reboot] (PS4) - I'd also like an HD collection of the PS1 and 2 games.
  • The Wticher 3: Wild Hunt (PS4/5) - Hoping the new game is just as good.
  • Dino Crisis 1 & 2 (PS1) - I'd love a reboot of this series in modern graphics.
  • ICO (PS2)
  • Prince of Persia Sands of Time (PS2)
  • A Plague Tale series (PS5)
  • Burnout Paradise (PS3/4)

Cool thread to bump up!
Thanks, I've noticed of course that it's a 2019 thread so I kinda did a stealth bump, lol. I love reading these lists.

As for my top favorite games.. I want to give it a slight twist and not just list my all time favorites cause it's boring, also plenty of them may not have stood the test of time since I've first played them, not to mention barely touched in recent years. But I want to list some of my favorites which I still do actually come back to and enjoy playing from time to time while still finding them genuinly exciting and fun even now. I'll try not to judge based on the old nostalgia googles. The music plays a big role for me. I'll keep it short and only list the games that really fit the above criteria of mine.

1. Shenmue II (2001)

Not sure I have the patience to playthru it again for the 10th time probably anymore but I love firing it up sometimes and just exist in this world, wander the streets, admire the scenery, play some darts, talk to people and listen to its magical music. It's a vibe. Is it the greatest game ever? Adventure/Action genre, yes.

2. Duke Nukem 3D (1996)

A classic FPS from the 90's. I can always fire it up, replay some missions and still have fun with it. Never gets old or boring. The level design is top notch while the music is so good that it's been a staple in my car playlist for years. I love Doom but this is better.

3. Doom (1993)

'nough said. An all time classic fps. Tons of great user created mods and maps. Still very playable.

4. Dark Souls 2 (2014)

Yeah, the black sheep of the Souls games family but I love this open world Action/RPG. I've played all Soulsborne etc. games to date but DS2 is probably my favorite and the one I still enjoy to replay the most. I love the environments and the hub music. It's got a serene and relaxing atmosphere. Never ending amount of quality gameplay here (as in the other games in the series really). Very replayable.

5. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2006)

My favorite game in the series to date and the first one I played. As with Shenmue II, I just love existing in this world, going through locations, talking to people and listen to an awesome ethereal soundtrack.

A few honorable mentions:

Shenmue (1999)

An unforgettable first chapter in the long running saga. A very different atmosphere in this first game, much more bleak and melancholia induced. Music is pure gold as always. Not as replayable as the 2nd one because of inability to skip time, so lots of time wasted on waiting for the next event to happen which gets old fast on subsequent playthroughs. Still a masterpiece of Adventure games.

Demon's Souls (2009)

The first and original Souls game. I've bought a PS5 just for the remake and didn't regret it. I still have a soft spot for the og PS3 version though. Amazing thick dark fantasy atmosphere with deep and rewarding gameplay. A far cry from something like Elden Ring.

Dark Souls (2012)

Countless hours spent on this one. The gameplay is just stellar and exciting. May be the best entry in franchise.

The Last Guardian (2016)

Wow, this game is special. A difficult and kinda frustrating game to replay so that's why it's not higher on my list. It's an unforgettable journey that will stay with you for the rest of your life (if you manage to complete it). The only game that always makes me cry like a baby by the end. The OST is one of the best I've ever heard.

I've made some edits and deleted some of the games that I don't feel match my criteria anymore.

some games i have fond memories of.

shenmue 1 (dreamcast)
shenmue 2 (dreamcast)
resident evil 2 (ps1)
resident evil 3 (ps1)
metal gear solid (ps1)
witcher 3 (ps4)
metal gear solid 4 (ps3)
halo 1 (xbox)
return to castle wolfenstein (2001 - pc)
battlefield 2 ( 2005 - pc )

battlefield 2 was one of the best multiplayer games i remember playing. it had simple graphics but everything about it was balanced, people worked together as a team and even people wanted to be commanders ( giving orders, directing squads to locations, using artillery etc) - multiplayer games like BF2 don't exist anymore.. maybe they should bring it back for consoles as a free game. (ea are pretty bad, they constantly close game servers).

also it had one of the best game intros

It has indeed been fun revisiting this thread, both to see people's choices and to see those that have left/been banned :(

But I can definitively say that my list has NOT changed even for a single game: same as it was in 2018 :D

My list will perhaps be controversial, but here it is! I'll follow the initial rules, with just one entry per franchise.

4. Shenmue 2
5. Soul Calibur

My list will perhaps be controversial
Huh? There's nothing controversial in your list, many Sega games included, all along this site's trends. Have you seen my list above? Now that's pretty controversial as it looks like I'm the only one here who loves Souls series and old school fps games

Huh? There's nothing controversial in your list

Haha yeah, I did wonder that after I posted it. I did think "actually, that's not really controversial at all 😂"

I just guessed that most people would disagree with Sonic Mania being better than the original series and possibly with BOTW being so high.

It's harder than I thought doing a list I am happy with. Already I feel Herzog Zwei at least should be swapped out.

Edit: Also, if you go into most Saturn groups and say Panzer Dragoon Saga is your favourite Saturn game, you'll face a lot of criticisms

Edit again: Just checked out your list and it's pretty cool. Dying Light is one of my favourite games of the last generation and Demon's Souls is amazing. I haven't played Dark Souls 2 or 3 yet, just the first one (and Bloodborne and Elden Ring).

In no order aside from shenmue

Shenmue 1
The Warriors
Red Dead Redemption 2
The Bouncer(yeah, I know)
Tekken 4(yeah, I know)
Max Payne 2
Max Payne 3
Streets of rage 2
Streets of rage 4
San Andreas
WWF No Mercy
Soul Calibur 1
Def Jam FFNY
The Walking Dead Telltale
MGS Snake Eater

Also, if you go into most Saturn groups and say Panzer Dragoon Saga is your favourite Saturn game, you'll face a lot of criticisms
Haha, really? Didn't know this. I thought Saga is a sacred game among Saturn fans

Finished God of War Ragnarok recently and have to add that to the list.

Shenmue 1 and 2
God of War Ragnarok
Mass Effect 1 and 2
Persona 5
Metal Gear Solid 2

Don't know why, it's the most masterpiecey of all masterpieces on the console.

I know right? It's one of my favourite RPGs of all time and I reckon it has aged way better than Final Fantasy VII. The battle system alone is so much better. The way it mixed real time and turn based was really unique and the leveling up system, switching between different types of dragoons was fantastic.

Shit, I need to replay it some time. But I am scared of touching my copy given how much they go for now 😂

BTW Truck, because of you, I bought that dodgeball game you mentioned on the Mega Drive earlier on in this thread. I had never heard of it, but it looks amazing.

Yeah, I think it's the magnum opus of Saturn if there ever was one. I played it for the first time last year so I didn't have any nostalgia for it. I absolutely loved the music in that game, not all but many tunes are some of the best I've ever heard in a videogame. The game itself certainly has aged quite a bit I guess. While playing it I kept thinking to myself how it could really benefit from the full on remake, there are so many beautiful vistas in the game. I'm sure the remake will come one day, just hope I'll not be too old enough when it comes

Huh, you’d think I’d have been in this thread before, but I guess not, unless I missed it somehow. Honorable mentions go out to Stray, Tunic, the Red Dead Redemption games, Saints Row 2, Bloodborne, Sekiro, probably some other newer games.

  1. Zelda: The Wind Waker - I like the new direction BotW has shown for the most part and TotK looks like it’ll bring even fresher ideas but there’s just too much nostalgia here for me. Had played OoT and the Oracle games prior but this was the first Zelda game I’d beat all on my own.
  2. No More Heroes - I kinda flipflop between this and Killer7, both are great for different reasons, but NMH was my first Grasshopper title and I just vibe with Travis more.
  3. The Last Guardian - Don’t really know why I got sucked in this game so much…I guess just into these more hohum linear puzzle adventure games, and a sucker for animals. Also love SotC and its remake but it feels a bit too formulaic for me.
  4. Nier - Initially interested in it as a Zelda clone but it’s so much more than that. There’s a ton of great stuff about the remake so it’s sort of tied with it for me, but I feel the father protagonist is just better.
  5. Deadly Premonition - Don’t think I’ve had this up here before. Definitely problems with the game, not even the same ones others have, but playing the sequel, well, both have their own strengths but it really made me realize how much I love the first game.
  6. Chrono Trigger - Not much to say that isn’t already obvious about it. Just a high quality adventure all around.
  7. Pokemon Gold/Silver - Also much nostalgia, kinda been debating whether I surprisingly enjoyed Scarlet more but I just kinda wish we could go back to bits and old school retro style.
  8. Metroid Prime Trilogy - kinda cheating lol but these are all great games.
  9. Paper Mario 2 - nostalgia definitely plays a role here but seeing what has become of the series I think it’s for good reason.
  10. God Hand - Just a really good fun beat ‘em up with some real challenge as well as a great sense of humor and style. Was between this and Okami, and tbh I love Okami but there’s parts I really don’t enjoy and it’s just too long winded at times.

Honoo no Doukyuji: Dodge Danpei! The first Japanese words I ever learned in my life

I FINALLY got a new 6 button controller for my Genesis and played Dodge Danpei last night to test it out. Not only is the controller INCREDIBLE, but there was even some input lag (somehow: didn't even know that was possible) with my old controller, as I kept trying to catch the balls too early.

I want to pick up the manga so badly, especially with the Google Translate app able to translate images; it'd be clunky, but I could read the whole thing.

The game is based off the manga more and the show doesn't touch practically any of the teams in the game, so I'd like to read 'em.

Slightly swerving here, I did play Final Fight CD as well, to test out my controller and I set my personal best with all characters in Time Attack, so I'll attempt that 1CC on Mania again :D

Awesome. I had to get a new 6 button pad last year as my old trusty one I have had for years just randomly started only being recognised as a 3 button pad one day. Not sure why, I opened it up and gave it a good clean, couldn't see any issues with the contacts for the mode button, but it still wouldn't work. Fortunately a shop close to me had one in stock, so I just went out and bought a new one.

I hadn't heard of the manga or anime. I might check them out some time. I am looking forward to playing the game though, it looks amazing. I hope I receive it soon.
