Lan Dis father

I can’t understand why some people are upset that we “relearned” that Zhao Sunming was Lan Dis father in Shenmue 3.

It’s such an important piece of information that it can’t just be mentioned once in the whole series and never mentioned again. The player needs to be reminded of this plot point especially since it was revealed 20 years ago in the previous game.

Besides, when we “relearned” this in Shenmue 3 it was always coupled with NEW plot information:

-Feng also tells Ryo that the man in the photo IS Zhao.

-Yuan also tells Ryo how and why Zhao obtained the mirrors to begin with and how Lan Di was abducted into the Chi You Men.

The notion that, inside these new plot points the characters are forbidden for reminding us that Zhao is Lan Dis father is nonsense.

The only problem with Shenmue 3 story is that we got no huge reveals, even the history is the mirrors was touched upon way back in S1 by Oishi San and the info of Lan Di being raised by the Chi You Men was not worthy of a great end-game revelation.

I wonder what the original ending of Shenmue 3 was supposed to be and what new information we might have got. The unused Lan Di line of him being hurt and vulnerable is certainly an interesting clue and would have gone a long way towards an excellent end game reveal… immortal Lan Di is only human afterall.

I sort of wish YS had been asked about the original ending.

But my point still stands, Zhao being Lan Dis father has to be brought to the forefront of the main plot periodically lest it be forgotten.

I had actually forgotten that most of what Yuanda Zhu says about the mirrors is already known by Ryo in Shenmue I, even down to the name of the stone and it coming from Guilin, until I took the phoenix mirror to the antique shop in the game a few days ago.

Worth remembering that if Ryo weren’t hell bent on tracking Lan Di like an animal, he could’ve just gone straight from Yokosuka to Guilin to find out more about the mirrors. We wouldn’t have had Shenmue II, though.

Yeah I missed the cutscene with Oishi San on my first play through when he tells you that the mirror came from Guilin and an emperor commissioned it. I did get the cutscene in Russiya China shop about the constellations and Shenhua which was better.

But Ryo never really cared the mirrors he just wants to find Lan Di.
