Dragon Quest Series

Does anyone play this series? A new entry in the series comes out September 4th. I have been waiting for a new console Dragon Quest for a long time, and it took a while for that to happen. I probably got to the point where a lot have lost interest in the series in the west. There have already been people who gave up interest in the series for whatever reason. Dragon quest VII remake for 3ds and dragon quest VIII 3ds probably helped gain some fanbase but I bet people who are already familiar with the series has bought those games. Concerning Dragon Quests new entry which is Dragon quest XI: Echoes Of An Elusive Age. Is anyone here a fan of the series and considering pre-ordering it?

I've never played a Dragon Quest game but have always wanted to, I've always loved JRPG's so had an interest but I didn't know about the series until after VIII came out. Then the next one was on DS and that was when I wasn't playing handhelds as much. I have every intention of getting XI but I don't know if I'll be gaming much for awhile now as I'm moving but even if I don't get it at launch I've just got to make sure I come back to it.

I have a fundamental problem with Dragon Quest - Silent Protagonist Syndrome.

When I play a game - especially a JRPG, I want to have a lead character I can follow and invest in, Final Fantasy has mostly succeeded in this (12 Not so much...), in investing in a lead character I want to succeed with them on their journey and follow them through all their trials that occur along the way. When you have A silent protagonist, all that appeal diminishes for me. I understand the concept of having a minimalist character so its open to more types of players feeling immersed but when the lead character is so empty like in this series I simply cannot step into their shoes, all I see is a blank avatar who shouldn't be there adn what makes matters worse is seeing other in-game characters act and tal around this - it breaks the immersion completely for me.

I have this problem on many games, Xenoblade Chronicles was one of the finest JPRG's within the last decade but the sequel on Wii-U was so soulless, i just couldn't get into it. It's also why I have struggled with Zelda games. A recent title which I think got the formula right was Resident Evil 7. Ethan is an established character, who is involved deeply within the plot but he doesn't say very much through out the game, mostly reactions to certain events. But it was enough to not have this 'Avatar' lack of presence which bothers me so in many other games.

It's a shame as I can see Dragon Quest has a lot going for it, I fully approve of the Remakes we'ev seen on the DS & 3DS over the years but I know personally that one feature will ruin the experience for me, so I can't see myself pre-ordering it - But I am sully supportive of Triple-A JRPG's on consoles!

i have the same problem as Vivi-gamer.
i really like to hear what my character is saying with his own voice. i love dialog options like in Mass Effect or Witcher
where your character says the line that you want to say and every little joke or whatever emotion
is written exactly for that "person". like how he pronounces things or if he has a really dark humor or whatever.
if the character doesnt say anything, i just feel disconnected because a part of his personality is completely missing.

I love Dragon Quest 8 on PS2 and the Monster Joker games on DS.

Yeah the silent here stigma in Dragon Quest and Zelda games and old games of the past.. stings. we have gotten so used to the talkative hero's from other rpg's (or have been spoiled with) that we can not see it any other way. When I noticed the silent hero in my first dragon quest game I was used to it thanks to LOZ OOT 64. So I am used to it and am considering preordering the game soon. I can't wait for the game to release. love to experience that classic old school DQ feel.

Considering Persona 5 is one of most highly rated and selling JRPGs, I find it hard to accept that people have such huge problems with a silent protagonist.

I don't particularly like JRPGs as I used to as a kid and I did not play all DQ games, but I gotta say Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride has one of the most epic stories I ever seen in any RPG despite the silent protagonist. While the Witcher games might have a protagonist with a personality and own voice (played Witcher 1, 2 and partially 3), DQ V is still easily the more personal journey and the game saga more fulfilling by the time the game credits roll. Not kidding.

I've heard really good thigns about Dragon Quest V - Japan actualy got a wonderfukl remake on PS2, but I am content with the DS version.

I struggled with Persona 3 aswell, but I think its bombastic style slightly won me over to look past it - But I do rememebr the lead character was able to make descisions with dialogue options, better than nothing. What really nags me is in the Anime adaptations they lead characters speak!

But if you like Dragon Quest don't let my setback put you off, beyond that I can see how it is a charming game for classic JRPG lovers.

Yeah like I said before I do not see any problem with the silent protagonist. I love this series!

hmmm wasn't the ps2 remake of V what the DS version is based off of? I remember VII came out late for PS one then the ps2 came out instead of having V on ps one they decided to do PS2 and only released it in Japan. V and VI release on DS was the first time they ever say western releases.
